Who is Peter Joyce?

Peter Joyce Contracting is a Family Firm

Four generations of the Joyce family have called the East End of Long Island their home. Today, Peter Joyce Sr. and Peter Joyce Jr. form our Peter Joyce Contracting leadership team. When you call Peter Joyce Contracting, you are truly calling Peter Joyce. Who is Peter Joyce? Here is their story.

Peter Joyce, Sr.

Twho is peter joycehere are really no small jobs, only first jobs. Our happy customers always want more, and ask us to do their workPeter Joyce, Sr.

Peter Sr. is a native of East Hampton village, born to a service-oriented family. His dad was a welder, who started an electrical contracting firm. As a youth,  Peter Sr. went out on trouble calls and came to know “something about everything”. More importantly, Peter Sr. learned at an early age about how to respond to people in need, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The people of Peter Joyce Contracting live that lesson today.

Young Entrepreneur

The entrepreneurial bug bit Peter Sr. early. When summertime customers needed weeding and yard work, it was Peter Sr. at age 11, who weeded, trimmed, pruned, and learned what hard work meant. With his own mowing route, and a mother who drove him to his engagements, Peter Sr. purchased push-mowers and got the job done as a 12-year old. By his first year in high school, he had hired three friends and built a successful business cutting grass and caring for yards. By his senior year in high school, Peter Sr. had over 100 clients.

Building Peter Joyce Contracting

After graduating from SUNY Oswego, where he earned a teaching degree in industrial arts, Peter Sr. decided to go full-blown into landscaping. Most of his competition was doing grounds maintenance, not landscaping, but he had a different idea. Peter Sr. bought his first tractor and truck and never looked back. An active learner, his watch phrase is “keep your mouth shut and your eyes open.” Soon, the firm was growing.

30 years ago, Peter Sr. bought the Montauk headquarters, including offices, a garden center, and a flower shop,  about 30 years ago. The business expanded into swimming pool work and and home construction after developing relationships with high-end pool firms and local architects. There is a common thread here. Peter Sr. developed the “One Call Does it All” philosophy, knowing that his clientele trusted him to take care of their needs.

Peter Sr. has given back to the community. He served as an officer in the Montauk Fire Department for 20 years, and was Fire Chief for three of those.

Today, Peter Joyce Contracting takes great pride in excellent service delivery for any client at any time. Whether it is handling emergencies or finding the right resource to deliver some special service, Peter Joyce Sr. does the right thing.

Fame and Accolades

In 2004, Peter Joyce Contracting renovated a prestigious Lake Montauk home, and that work drew attention to the firm.  Peter Sr’s work has been published in “This Old House” and “Bathroom Trends” magazines. He has been written up in “Women’s Day Kitchens and Baths,” which has been published as a book in the spring of 2006. Of course, his work has also received notice in the local East End papers. Peter prefers working for his clients to seeking publicity and the firm’s work speaks for itself. Today, Peter Sr. continues at the helm of Peter Joyce Contracting. At every opportunity he forms lasting  relationships with his clients, and enjoys their friendship and their referrals.

 Peter Joyce, Jr.

The most important thing in our business is making sure we give our clients the attention they deserve. We listen carefully to make sure we address their issues and give them what they really need Peter Joyce, Jr.

Peter Joyce Jr. started working with his father at the tender age of 12. Like his dad, he started by mowing lawns and cleaning pools. It was a good start for Peter, who today is the foreman for the landscaping portion of the business.

Education Meets Experience

A course on landscape architecture at the Ross School led Peter Jr. to The State University of New York Environmental Science and Forestry School (SUNY-ESF), where he studied sustainable construction and graduated with a degree in landscape architecture. He cares about how how sustainable and carbon neutral your new construction will be, and helps you plan accordingly. For example, clients want to see planting plans developed in advance of work. Peter Jr. can show you how your plantings will look this year, and years in the future. Why guess, when you can know. Today, many of Peter Jr’s clients are new homeowners buying houses that Peter Sr. built and landscaped 25 years ago. Today, Peter Jr. leads a team of 16 full time landscape and construction pros.

Who is Peter Joyce? It is the whole team, working for you.

Peter Joyce Contracting cares about the community because they are a part of it, and have seen it grow and evolve.Today, when someone with a pickup truck and some mowers declares himself or herself a landscaper, the 50+ years of experience in Peter Joyce Contracting team stands in contrast.  The team rescued a project in which a pool hadn’t been built to the architect’s plans and was incomplete as summer approached. Peter Joyce Contracting pulled together the right resources and made certain their new client enjoyed their pool and their home, in time for the season’s start. Their winning combination of skill and reliability and skills is compelling. Licensed in East Hampton and South Hampton, they will raise the roof for you, as they did one night for a client who couldn’t get their brand new cabinets into the house. Peter Joyce “raised the roof” and saved the day.
